History and Naming
There is nothing better than French toast for Sunday breakfast. Thick slices of bread, soaked in the mixture of beaten eggs with cinnamon and milk, toasted either in frying pan and microwave oven, and served with maple syrup and milk, this must be one of our favorite, and most indulgent, breakfast dishes.French toast is also known as eggy bread, gypsy toast, German toast, poor knights or Spanish toast. The history of French toast lies in the Apicius, a collection of Latin recipes dating to the 4th and 5th century; the recipe mentions soaking in milk, but not an egg, and gives it no special name, they call it just sweet dish.
Preparation and Serving
A delicious French toast can be prepared by using two methods, both has their own ingredients, cooking timing and number.
- Using Stove Top Method
Ingredients required to make fried French toast include 1 egg for every two slices of bread, non-sticky spray ( olive oil or butter ), cinnamon, 3ml vanilla essence or almond essence, bread, toppings, or milk ( depending on a number of milk ).
- Using Microwave Method
Ingredients required to make microwaved French toast include 1 egg for every two slices of bread, 1 tablespoon milk, 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, cinnamon, bread, desired toppings.
As I told you earlier both of these methods can help us to make delicious French toast, but here, we are going to discuss only stove top method. Follow these steps, and you'll soon be enjoying a delicious taste of French toast.
Stove Top Method
- Set the stove to medium high heat and place pan over the burner. After placing pan add either some butter or olive oil to the pan, so that bread will not get stick to the pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and cinnamon. Whisk the mixture until well blended and pour into a shallow bowl, wide enough to place a slice of the bread you will be using.
- Turn the heat down to medium-low, once the pan is heated sufficiently.
- Now place each slice of bread into milk-egg mixture, allowing the bread to soak in some of it.
- Cook the toast until golden on both sides. It takes approximately 45 seconds per side.
- Serve hot with butter, maple syrup, and if available, berries.
Things to Remember
French toast comes out best if you work with thick slices of Italian and French loaf bread that are several days old. That way they have had a chance to firm up, which will make the slices hold up better when you dip them in milk-egg mixture and fry them. Thin slices of bread tend to fall apart or get mushy when you do this.
