Nail biting is an oral compulsive habit that is very common in children and adults. Medically, it is known as onychophagia. Many people are not even aware of the fact that are biting their nails. From a mild habit, nail biting can become a more serious problem.

Stress, boredom, frustration, anxiety and loneliness are some of the common reasons behind nail biting. It can be also a symptom of psychological conditions, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, separation anxiety disorder or bed-wetting.

Nail biting has both physical and emotional consequences. Excessive nail biting can cause severe damage to the nail, cuticles as well as surrounding skin, which can become sore and red and may even bleed and infected, Nail biting can also harm your teeth. 

Nail biting is extremely hard habit to break, but not an impossible task. You can do it with a little motivational and will power. Here are some vital tips to get rid of this socially unacceptable habit which gives negative impression to others.

You have earned manicure for reaching your goal to stop biting your nails. Not to mention, having nail polish may push back the urge to bit your nails, since you don't want to bite into nail polish or ruin your manicure. Once your nails are in great shape, you should focus on keeping them that way, and the best way to show off your shiny new nails is to get manicure

  • Keep your nails relatively short:
A simple manicure can help maintain your healthy nails, and so well keeping them relatively short and preventing yourself from biting them more.

If you have any surplus growth, cut your nails back. Keep clippers with you all the times. You can't bite if there is nothing there.

  • Celebrate your nail success:
Don't be afraid to show off your new nails to your friends, or even to the people you don't know them well. Show your hands and say '' Can you believe I used to have a nail-biting problem.

Take photos of your hand and enjoy how good they look. You can even hang them up, or hang them next to a photo of ragged ''before" nails to show that you are capable of making big changes in your life.

Chew gum or suck mints or candies throughout the day. Biting your nails will be tough if you are busy chewing gum or taking in the delicious sucking candy. Carry around the water bottle. Bring water with you whenever you go outside so you can always take a sip of water when you are having a weak moment.

The bitter taste of neem oil can help you stop nail biting. Additionally, being an antiseptic, neem oil will keep your nails free from infection.

  1. Use a cotton ball to rub neem oil on your nails.
  2. Allow it to dry on its own.
  3. When you unconsciously bite your nails, the bitter taste will comple you to remove your fingers from mouth.
  • Garlic
Garlic is another ingredient that can help you in the battle to fight nail biting. Many people dislike garlic's strong taste and aroma. As garlic is an natural antiseptic, it will also strengthen and keep infections at bay. You can use both garlic oil and raw garlic.

  1. Cut a clove of garlic into halves. Run one piece over your nails liberally and leave it on for a few minutes before washing it off. The lingering garlic taste will stop you from biting your nails.
  2. You can also rub garlic oil on your nails with a cotton ball.
